Lhasa is a 1300 - year - old city. It located in the southeast of the Tibet [tɪ'bɛt] Plateau which is the highest place on earth. It is closest to the sun, and more than 3000 sunshine hours throughout the year, as a result also called "sun city". Lhasa is Tibet's first big city. Because of the high altitudes in Lhasa, so the temperature is low. And because there are many high mountains, the top of which is covered by snow all the year round. At the foot of the mountain are prairies ['preərɪs]. So there are a lot of sheep and cattle.
Food in Lhasa is mainly beef, mutton and dairy ['dɛri] products. The quantity of heat of beef and mutton is very high. It will help the people who live at high altitudes to withstand the cold. Tibetan New Year is the most important festival of the Tibetan people. In the New Year's Day, the first thing they do is going to the river and backing the first bucket of water.
